History Population 1,800 3,500 in Surrounding Area The name comes from legends of a Priest, ministering to early settlers, who disappeared one winter and was presumed drowned in the lake. The lake is also famed for being the site of several early silent movies produced by Nell Shipman in the twenties. |
| "We're Up North in North Idaho" Located approximately 75 miles north of Coeur d'Alene, Priest Lake offers a wealth of year-round recreational opportunities in one of the most pristine settings in the West. The lake system, accessible from Priest River via Highway 57, is 25 miles long. It actually consists of two lakes jointed by a 2-mile ling slow-moving river known as the Thoroughfare. The area boasts 80 miles of shoreline and many excellent accesses and beaches for swimming, picnics and various boating sports. Visitors are well accommodated with marina and vehicle service, boat rentals and grocery/tackle shops. A number of choice resorts complete with restaurants and lounges and a variety of events throughout the year. The area is rich in hiking and mountain bike trails, and includes a nine-hole golf course. A museum and visitors center on the western side of the lake houses interpretive historical displays pertaining to Priest Lake's past and provides information on recreation. The Center is located in a historic log cabin and is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm throughout the summer. Tour the Trees in any Season The interpretive nature trails through the Hanna Flats Cedar Grove takes you beneath immense trees that have survived generations of homesteading, logging, wind and fire. Priest Lake's 400 miles of groomed, marked and patrolled snowmobile trails and ample snowfall make it a winter wonderland. Cross-country skiers enjoy groomed trails throughout the area. In January and February join on snowshoe volleyball and softball tournaments. Check local resorts for more information and activities calendars. For a unique experience stay for the W. S.
