History Population 6,855 The city of Sandpoint is name for the extensive sandy beach area that extends into Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced Pond-O-Ray) is said to have been named by French fur trappers who thought the lake was shaped like a large ear. Early trapper, David Thompson who worked for The Hudson Bay Company, was responsible for charting maps for much of North Idaho as well as building a trading post east of Sandpoint near Hope, Idaho, called the Kalispell House. |
| Just 40 minutes north of Coeur d'Alene is Sandpoint, an eclectic and exciting city that offers cultural and recreational opportunities year round. Sandpoint is nestled on the western shores of Lake Pend Oreille. One of the largest lakes in the west, Pend Oreille is more than 43 miles long, 6 miles wide, 111 miles of shoreline and has depths of more than 1,000 feet. On the south end of the lake, huge cliffs plummet to the water's edge. On the northwestern side of Lake Pend Oreille are the rugged Selkirk Mountains, home of Schweitzer Mountain Resort. Schweitzer is famous for it's superb ski conditions, top-notch facilities and multi-seasonal activities and events. Committed to the Arts Well known for its commitment to the arts, the charming city of Sandpoint is a haven for cultural activity. Each summer, the Festival at Sandpoint features the Spokane Symphony Orchestra. held at waters edge under starry skies, the sites and sounds of music flowing over a grass field covered with picnic blankets of wine and cheese create storybook memories that will last a lifetime. This 17 year tradition is a mainstay for many Northwestern family summer event schedules. The Pend Oreille Arts Council sponsors year-round concerts in addition to the POAC Arts and Crafts Fair each summer. Their summer sounds music series has had an added to the ambiance of downtown. Along with numerous galleries that showcase works of regional artists, the downtown features the recently restored Panida Theater. Built in 1927, the theater hosts area dance troupes, films, concerts and fund-raising events. The elegant theater has been supported by a local contingency that has helped draw big-name talent like Bonnie Raitt, Emmy Lou Harris, Leo Kottke and the San Francisco Opera Company to the stage. The annual Sandpoint Winter Carnival provides a week of ice sculpture, food concessions, ski competition, parades and music in January. In May, attend the Lost in the '50s weekend car show, dance and celebration. Or for a unique experience, plan to visit the International Draft Horse Show held each fall at the Bonner County Fairgrounds. Witness teams of up to 20 horses in full harness maneuver precision arena routines. With mountain bike rentals available in town, Sandpoint is easy to explore. Many scenic trails (hiking or biking) are easily accessible. Sandpoint touts itself as "a walking town". |
