History Population 960 In 1860 the building of the Mullan Road brought rumors of gold in the area. 20 years later Andrew J. Prichard discovered gold near the North fork of the Coeur d'Alene River. In 1884 silver was discovered in the Coeur d'Alene Mountains. By 1890, Wallace became the hub of one of the richest mining districts in the world. Early days were rough and tumble and names such as Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane and Mollie b'Dam were present near the county seat located at Murray. The entire city of Wallace is listed on the national historic register. |
| Historic Wallace is located about 20 miles west of the Montana state line on I-90. In addition to the entire downtown being listed on The National Historic Registry, it has drawn national attention from the movie industry with the filming of "Dantes Peak," and outdoor enthusiasts with the "Silver County" 1000 mile trail system. Melodrama Tells It All Housed in the oldest wood-frame structure in Wallace and the site of Frank Kelly's paint and wallpaper store as well as the former Lux Bordello, the Sixth Street Melodrama offers cultural plays and family entertainment throughout the year. The summer performances consist of originally written dramas based on actual stories and histories of the region. |
